Calculate Baby Age

Month 2 of 12

2 Months Old

Month two is when a lot of parents get their first real social payoff — the earliest smiles that are clearly aimed at you, not just gas.

Last reviewed: August 8, 2026

The jump from month one to month two is largely about intention: movements start to look less jerky and more deliberate, and the earliest social smile — a genuine response to a face, not a reflexive one — is one of the most reliable milestones pediatricians ask about at the two-month checkup. This is also typically when the first round of routine vaccinations happens, on the chronological (actual birth date) schedule regardless of whether a baby was born early.

Motor & Physical

  • Holds head more steadily when upright
  • Arm and leg movements look smoother, less jerky
  • Opens hands more of the time instead of staying fisted
  • Pushes up slightly on arms during tummy time

Cognitive

  • Watches faces intently
  • Starts to track an object side to side with their eyes
  • Begins to notice their own hands as separate from the rest of the world

Language & Communication

  • Begins cooing with vowel sounds ('ah', 'ooh')
  • Quiets or brightens at a familiar voice
  • Makes different sounds for different needs

Social & Emotional

  • First real social smile usually appears
  • May briefly self-soothe by sucking on a hand
  • Shows early signs of enjoying playful interaction, not just tolerating it

Feeding & sleep at this age

Feeding intervals often stretch slightly, and some babies start dropping one nighttime feed around now, though plenty don't. Some babies string together one longer nighttime sleep block (4–6 hours), though plenty still wake every 2–4 hours — both are normal at this age. Total daily sleep is usually still in the 14–16 hour range.

When to check in with your pediatrician

No social smile at all by the end of the month, not tracking faces or objects, no reaction to loud noises, noticeable head lag every time they're pulled to sitting, or a baby who doesn't seem to calm at all with comforting.

This is general information, not medical advice — if anything about your baby's development concerns you, talk to your pediatrician.

Born early? Milestones like these are usually tracked by corrected agerather than chronological age. Add a due date in the calculator below to see your baby's corrected age automatically.

Questions about 2 months old

When exactly should the first smile show up?

Most babies smile socially somewhere between 6 and 10 weeks — 2 months is the commonly cited average, not a hard deadline. A late smile on its own usually isn't a red flag, especially if other signs of engagement (watching faces, calming to a familiar voice) are already present.

Is corrected age still relevant at 2 months?

Yes — corrected age matters most in the first two years, and it's especially relevant early on when weeks of prematurity are a larger share of total age. Add a due date in the calculator above to see it, and mention your baby's corrected age at pediatrician visits when discussing developmental milestones specifically.

Do vaccines at the 2-month visit go by chronological or corrected age?

Chronological age — vaccination schedules are based on actual birth date regardless of prematurity, since they're tied to immune system readiness and disease exposure risk, not developmental stage. This is different from milestones like smiling or rolling, which are better compared using corrected age for a baby born early.

My baby cries a lot in the evening — is this colic?

Increased evening fussiness peaking around 2–6 weeks and often easing by 3–4 months is common and sometimes labeled colic when it's frequent, intense, and hard to soothe. It's usually not a sign of anything medically wrong, but persistent inconsolable crying is worth discussing with a pediatrician to rule out other causes.
