Month 8 of 12
8 Months Old
Cruising along furniture, a more precise finger grasp, and stronger stranger awareness are typical hallmarks of month eight.
Last reviewed: August 8, 2026
Eight months tends to combine two things that don't always get equal attention: a genuine leap in fine motor precision — the emerging pincer grasp makes small objects newly interesting and newly hazardous — and a commonly cited peak in stranger wariness, which can catch parents off guard if a previously easygoing baby suddenly seems clingy around unfamiliar people.
Motor & Physical
- Pulls to stand and may cruise along furniture
- Crawls or scoots to get where they want to go
- Starts picking up small objects with thumb and finger
- Lowers themselves from standing to sitting with some control
Cognitive
- Finds a toy hidden under a cloth
- Understands simple cause and effect (shaking makes noise)
- Watches and imitates simple actions, like putting an object into a container
Language & Communication
- Says 'mama'/'dada' without necessarily meaning a specific parent yet
- Uses gestures like waving
- Babbles with a wider range of consonant sounds
Social & Emotional
- Stranger wariness often peaks around now
- Seeks comfort from familiar caregivers
- May cling or fuss during brief separations even from a familiar caregiver
Feeding & sleep at this age
Food texture and variety usually expand, and the emerging pincer grasp makes self-feeding with small soft finger foods more realistic. Many babies' naps consolidate down to two more predictable naps a day around this stage, though the exact timing of that shift varies by several weeks in either direction.
When to check in with your pediatrician
Doesn't crawl or scoot at all, can't stand even when supported, doesn't search for a hidden object, doesn't use any gestures like waving, or shows no wariness or reaction to unfamiliar people or situations at all.
This is general information, not medical advice — if anything about your baby's development concerns you, talk to your pediatrician.
Questions about 8 months old
My baby scoots on their bottom instead of crawling on hands and knees — is that a problem?
No. Bottom-scooting, commando-crawling on the belly, and classic hands-and-knees crawling are all typical variations. Some babies skip crawling styles entirely and go straight to cruising along furniture without a distinct crawling phase at all.
Is stranger anxiety at its worst at 8 months?
For many babies, yes — this is a commonly cited peak window, though the intensity and timing vary a lot from baby to baby, and some don't show much stranger wariness at this age at all.
What small objects are choking hazards now that my baby has a pincer grasp?
Anything that can fit through a standard toilet-paper tube — small food pieces, coins, button batteries, small toy parts — becomes a real risk once a baby can pick things up precisely. This is a good month to do a floor-level safety check of anything within reach.
My baby cruises along furniture but won't let go to stand alone — is that expected?
Yes — cruising while holding on typically comes well before standing unsupported, sometimes by a couple of months. Holding on provides balance a baby hasn't developed independently yet, and letting go usually happens gradually as confidence and core strength build.
